Big Gig: Woody
Woody , a native of New zealand , trained in classical music in uk during the late seventies, moved to new zealand and there studied jazz and has been performing professionally as a funk style saxophone , flute , clarinet and bass player in clubs scince 1985. In the late nineties he began fusing his funk roots with electronic music and has been an electronic artist performing scince 1999. Woody became an integral part of the welllington nz underground dance music scene experimenting with fusing live music with house , techno , trip hop , dub and drum and bass. Working with several underground dance party outfits , Hullabaloo and the gathering he honed his skills and then one fine day decided to come to India. Inspired by hearing the bansuri flute in a film festival in wellington he worked hard to be able to come and study bansuri with the famed Hari Prasad Chaurasia. Seven years later he is still here settled now in India and has performed with some of the country’s best jazz and dj artists , has been doing shows all over the country in his time here and is striving to share his music with India as much as possible . “India has given so much to me in terms of inspiration and music and I really want to give as much as I can back in terms of performing and teaching . Indian audiences are fantastic to perform to as music is in their blood and that vibration can be felt all over the country , particularly south India , Kolkatta and Pune. Different varieties of music not usually heard here are now flourishing in India so its a great time to be a musician in this part of the world”. On Friday night at high spirits he will be mixing funky house and performing live sax and flute over the top full throttle.
